Open MRI

« Back to Glossary Index

Depending on your study your doctor may prescribe an open MRI. Typically, an open MRI will have two flat magnets positioned over and undereath with a wide open space for you the lay in. This configuration helps alleviate any claustrophobia.

Since the magnetic field is more open the image will typically not be as a high of quality from a closed-bore or wide-bore machine. The magnetic strength ranges from .2T to as high as 1.0T. The open option is a good blend of imaging need, cost and patient comfort.
